Illegal Immigration and the Hispanic Population in the US
The New Latin Nation: Immigration and the Hispanic
Population of the United States
Alejandro Portes
This article by Alejandro Portes, outlines
the growth of the illegal Hispanic population in the United States. Without Hispanics
in the United States, the United States would have lost its population. The large number of immigrants consists
mainly of Mexicans and Latin Americans due to labor migration. Most Mexicans have moved to Texas and California. Each nationality has mainly chosen a state to reside in.
In my experience, I have noticed
that Mexicans can be one of the hardest working individuals, working long hours
with extremely low pay. They live in overcrowded apartments and most send money
back to their families in Mexico. Most
have come into the United States illegally to find work. Once they have been
caught and sent back to their countries, they manage to gain entrance back into
the United States. Some need to return because they have left their families
behind. Without laborers, such as Mexicans, the United States' economy would decline.
Those migrating to the United States mainly leave their country due to necessities. First generation immigrants tend to
return to their country at some point in their lives, but second generation US born, stay here. Most first generation immigrants come to this
country to save up some money. They send money back home and some either build
homes over there and return to their countries.
For example, my grandparents came to the United States legally from
Colombia. They saved money, purchased a home in New York and one in Colombia. During
the winter seasons, my grandmother would leave to Colombia for a couple of
months. If she would have had a better life in her country, she would have returned.
