“How to Tame a Wild Tongue” Gloria Anzaldúa,

This article speaks of how Anzaldua needed to learn English without having an accent.  Nearly every person coming to the United States from any other country has some kind of accent.  I do not see why it was important to have their accent corrected once they are in the States, since eventually they will learn English without having an accent.

 

This article also relates to how people speak. How it is not proper to say certain phrases. This is a diverse country and different cultures have different manners of speaking. Same goes to the people who have English as their first language. There are many forms of speaking English. In certain states, the English language is spoken with accents. For example. Texans have an accent.  People from the South have an accent. Some have a different dialect. Same goes for Westerners.

 

Chicano Spanish is mainly spoken of in this article. This is the type of Spanish Anzaldua spoke. Some may see it as speaking poor Spanish, but we can say the same for some other Spanish speaking countries.  I know my grandmother made fun of my other grandmothers’ Spanish because her Spanish “r” sounded like “j”. This was improper, but it was the way she was taught and those who lived in her town spoke in the same manner.
