“Blogueras: Latina Body Image,” Maria Hinojosa, Patricia Valoy and Kassandra Peña

Latinas have always had a tougher time with their body image in comparison to other women. Being a Latina varies in thier appearance. Some are light skin, dark skin, fair skin, long, light, dark, kinky, curly or straight hair. Some are skinny and no curves, as others are shapely. Some have a shapely buttocks while others do not. This is in comparison to Caucasian women or Asian women or others of different ethnicities who each have very similar features within their country. Therefore, Latinas must prove themselves more than other women of different ethnicities.

Different ethnicities have different cultures and also have a certain perception of their body image. As mentioned in the blog, some women need to have their entire body "hair free". Not even having fine hairs on their face.  That is not customary for Latinas. It is also okay for Latinos to see their women shapely. We do not consider them “fat”. A Caucasian man can find his Caucasian partner fat if they have wide hips. It was not until Jennifer Lopez and other Latinas who have come out and shown the world that it is not bad to have some weight and mass in certain body parts.

The blog mentions how girls are now looking at thigh gaps in order to prove that they are skinny. As I mentioned before, Latinas have all types of body shapes. As long as the person is healthy, they should not be considered “fat”. Middle school females begin focusing on their bodies at this stage in life. This is when they should be taught not to be ashamed of their body, as long as they are keeping it healthy by eating properly and working out.
